This week I want to talk about books that changed my life, and the first is E Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.
When I first took over the family business there was me, four service technicians and an admin person. When the clients had a problem the called me, when the service technicians had a problem they called me, when the admin person had a problem they called me, 24 hours a day 7 days per week – it was relentless and the only way I could see to operate the business.
And then I read E-myth Revisited!
The E-Myth Revisited gave me a different way of looking at building my business – I realised that I could replicate what I was doing multiple times, a group of service technicians with a manager, fast forward 10 years and my fire protection maintenance business now has four of these business units operating around the state.
So, what are my key learnings from the E-myth Revisited?

So, what are my key learnings from the E-myth Revisited?
- The Technician, the Manager and the Leader – understanding which I was when and which I needed to be.
- The Franchise Prototype – build your business like you were building a business to franchise it, each business unit in my fire protection maintenance business operates as its own little franchise.
- Working on your business not in it – If you always work in your business it will never move to the next level, I now spend the majority of time work on my businesses (and other peoples).
- Quantification – business is about the numbers, if it doesn’t add up it doesn’t work. I have evolved this into our Eyes On Hands Off model for tracking performance in the past, present and future.
- Start with the end in mind – We developed a vision for the business that is reflected in everything that we do.
