Breakeven Brad is always short on cash, he is only ever just able to pay his bills and he is always working, he is hustling!
Compare this with Profit Pete. Pete has built his business around being as profitable as he can. He spends money where he needs to in his business, but only if it will grow his profits, ever through growth in sales or the profit margin. He seems to work less than Brad but make more money, why?
Reason 1 – Focus
Brad is focused on the work, on doing the job.
Pete is focused on making profit. This means that he has to make time to work on the parts of his business that make profit. To identify these, he needs to take time away from working in the business, doing the work, and focus on working on the business.
Over time Pete spends more time working on the business as he learns that this is where the biggest leverage is to increase profit.
Reason 2 – Knowledge
Brad is focused on doing the work, so he increases his knowledge in what his business does, he is a master craftsman. He hates the work of running the business as this takes away from the craft.
Pete is focused on growing the profit, he is also a master craftsman, but in the craft of growing a profitable business, not the craft his business does. So, Pete reads books, listens to podcasts on building businesses, takes self-development courses and works with a coach to get an outsiders perspective.
The result!
Pete has learnt that he needs to be effective not just busy, so he programs how he uses his time for the biggest benefit to the business as a whole. From the outside this means he has more flexibility with his time and never seems to be busy.
While Brad continues to run from one job to the next, always busy, productive but not effective.
Don’t be a Brad – Be a Pete.
